One of my favorite aspects of Thai massage is the use of herbal compresses. The compresses contain a blend of aromatic and therapeutic herbs wrapped in cotton muslin and then steamed to release the potent healing qualities of the herbs. During a massage, I wrap the compresses in towels and use them to gently press the muscles, imparting the warmth and healing qualities of the herbs.
Thai massage using compresses is a multi-therapy massage treatment, combining traditional Thai massage, aromatherapy and herbal healing. This massage technique dates back several thousand years, and incorporates knowledge gathered and passed on for generations concerning the medicinal effects of plants. The compresses can relieve aches and pains due to overexertion, poor posture, a sedentary lifestyle, and are beneficial for opening up the energy channels – particularly in winter when we tend to be less active.
I make my own compresses using organic and locally grown herbs, whenever possible. I create my own blends based on the season, the healing properties of the herbs, and the needs I observe in my clients. Currently, the compresses contain some combination of rosemary, sage, clary sage, tulsi (holy basil), lemongrass, lemon balm, comfrey, lavender, ginger, peppermint, chamomile, and calendula. I make a new batch every two weeks or whenever they start losing their scent or stop holding heat. If you have any questions about the compresses, or would like to donate fresh herbs in the summer, please feel free to contact me.
